Latest Dolphin-class submarine produced in Germany named INS Rahav is on the way to the Israeli port of Haifa where it will be delivered to the Israeli Navy.
INS Rahav, the Hebrew name for the Greek god of the sea Poseidon, is one of the most expensive resources within the Israeli armed forces. Arrival of the submarine in Haifa comes about a decade after the Israeli government ordered submarines from the German manufacturer Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft.
The company unveiled a submarine in April 2013, but was still more work needed to ensure that the submarine is fully operational. Rahav is the fifth submarine of the Dolphin class that will be delivered to the Israeli Navy, according to the Times of Israel.
Rahav is the second submarine of the new generation, with air independent propulsion, built after the submarine INS Tanin, which entered Israeli service in 2014. The cost of the submarine INS Rahav is estimated at about $ 2 billion.
Rahav will arrive in Haifa in mid-January. After its arrival, the submarine will undergo a series of installations of software systems before entering the service in 2016.
